Over the course of more than 20 seasons, across 8 generations ofPokémon, Ash's adventures have taken him all over the Pokémon world. Every time he reaches a new region, he almost immediately has people who want to follow him on his journey, whether they have their own motives and goals or they just want to support Ash.

While Ash bonds with his travel companions in each generation, the team dynamics still vary as everyone has their own quirks, strengths and weaknesses. This means that some generations are stronger than others.

8 Generation V: Cilan & Iris Just Couldn't Fill The Void That Brock & Dawn Left Behind

Ash Cilan Iris

Gen V is the first full series without Brock as one of Ash's travel companions and it somewhat suffers because of it. Cilan fills the role that Brock held across 4 generations and 4 regions of travelling, and while Cilan made a good companion, Brock's absence was still fresh and noticeable.

Iris is a champion in the Black & White games and eventually in the anime, but her attitude makes her seem more immature than Ash at times, despite trying to be like that. As a trio, they still work well together, but they don't measure up to the teams of the other generations.

7 Generation VIII: Ash & Goh Need That Frequent Third Member

Ash Goh Pokemon Journeys

Ash's travel companion forPokémon Journeys is Goh, a Pokémon fanboy who dreams of catching every Pokémon, including Mew. While he and Ash get on really well and have great team chemistry, their team arguably needs another person in it, as a party of three or four has always been the best dynamic.

Chloe occasionally joins them, but it isn't anywhere near the same as the other generations. However, the fact that they both have different goals – Goh's catching dream, and Ash wanting to become the best and beat Leon – means that their goals don't get in the way of each other and they can ultimately achieve both on the same journey.

6 Generation VII: The Pokémon School Group Allowed For Different Combinations And Fresh Dynamics

Alola Friends Sun & Moon Kiawe Lillie Mallow Sophocles Lana Ash Misty Brock

The Sun & Moon adventures in Alola see Ash making even more friends than he has before. He attends the Pokémon School with 5 other students and they, along with Professor Kukui, accompany him on most of his adventures. They all have their own personalities, quirks, strengths and weaknesses, and despite there being so many of them, they are all given time to shine.

There are frequent episodes where smaller groups will form and garner more individual focus, allowing for different and ever-changing group dynamics per episode. Kiawe, Lana, Mallow, Lillie and Sophocles all making it to the knockout rounds of the Manalo Conference towards the end of Sun & Moon feels like such a satisfying conclusion as they have all been given enough character and substance to deserve being cared about.

5 Generation III: May & Max Added A Fresh Look To Ash's Team

The team of Ash, Brock, May and her younger brother, Max, is a strong one in terms of their friendships and team dynamic, with it lasting the entirety of the Hoenn region and all of the Battle Frontier arc. As the children of the Petalburg Gym Leader Norman, May and Max are proud of their father, with May initially wanting to follow in his footsteps and become a strong trainer.

May's eventual realization is that she is better suited to becoming a Pokémon Coordinator rather than a trainer, which certainly adds a new dynamic to the series, meaning that the sole focus isn't always on Ash and his quest to become a Pokémon Master.

4 Generation I: Misty, Brock & Tracey Helped Ash Get Started On His Journey

Tracy Ash Misty Orange Islands Ash Brock Kanto Travel Companions

Brock and Misty are synonymous withPokémon, Ash, and his travelling companions. The first few seasons saw them journey through Kanto and their friendships grow from nonexistent to really strong as the three of them learn a lot along the way.

The Orange Islands arc sees Brock leave to assist Professor Ivy, which paves the way for Tracey Sketchit to join Ash and Misty on their exploration of the Orange Islands. Tracey isn't necessarily a bad character, but he doesn't really add anything too substantial, and following on from the strong dynamic that Ash, Misty and Brock built over the course of the mainland Kanto adventures, he really had big boots to fill.

3 Generation VI: Serena, Clemont & Bonnie Contributed To The Best-Balanced Group Dynamic

Kalos Pokemon Travel Companions Clemont Serena Bonnie Ash Pikachu Chespin

Despite not winning the Kalos Pokémon League, X & Yis arguably one Ash's best generations overall in terms of his team, synergy with said team, strategies, and travel companions. Serena's devotion to Ash is clear, but it doesn't completely define who she is, allowing her to be of great support to him when needed but also having her own interests.

Clemont's drive and desire to become better as a Gym Leader also make him a valuable companion, and Bonnie is just adorable. The overall team dynamic feels seamless and not at all forced, allowing for more focus on Ash's battling and progress, rather than taking away from it.

2 Generation II: The Original Trio Were Back At It Again

Anime Pokemon Johto Journeys Ash Misty Brock

Johto sees the continuation of the dream team: Ash, Brock and Misty. Their dynamic continues to grow while also remaining familiar, with Misty nagging and bickering with Ash, and Brock constantly being distracted with girls. However, with Johto being new to all three of them, thePokémon series continues to feel like even more of a journey of discovery, with the wonder of new encounters and positive experiences outweighing anything negative.

1 Generation IV: Ash, Brock & Dawn Had The Best Team Synergy

Pokemon Ash Dawn Brock

Apart from Gen VI, all of the best generations of thePokémon anime have had Brock as one of Ash's travel companions, which speaks volumes as to how valuable he is to Ash andPokémon  as a whole. The addition of Dawn to that winning formula makes for a great team as they journey around Sinnoh.

Dawn really bonds with Ash, and this is reflected by the fact that they don't bicker constantly, unlike with May and Misty. She goes on her own positive character arc which aligns perfectly with Ash's aims and ambitions.
